Read previewAustin Walters started SpringTide Ventures in 2018 to disrupt healthcare by democratizing access to health innovations. The firm just closed its second $65 million fund to make more of those bets. A tough fundraising environmentAfter closing on its first $20 million fund, which the firm began investing out of in 2019, SpringTide originally set a $100 million target in 2021 for its second fund, Walters said. SpringTide picks a different focus area each time — most recently, home health, where the firm has invested in companies like family primary care startup Nest Health. By solving significant problems with advanced technologies, these companies have natural competitive advantages that allow them to drive outsize returns for the firm, Walters said.

Hedge fund manager and New York Mets baseball team owner Steven Cohen has already begun to invest in a four-day work week. Cohen isn't alone in forecasting a four-day work week. Jefferies thinks artificial intelligence will make workers more efficient and eventually lead to a four-day work week becoming the norm, according to a note from June 2023. Bank of America also expects the changing post-pandemic work landscape may result in a shorter work week. Opposition to change Opponents to a shorter work week, however, argue that such a change is both politically and economically unfeasible.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON/DETROIT, Oct 23 - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union went on strike at Chrysler-parent Stellantis's largest assembly plant on Monday, hitting the automaker's profitable RAM 1500 pickup truck production in a major expansion of the more than month-old strike. The union has demanded a 40% wage hike, including a 20% immediate increase, improvements in benefits, as well as covering EV battery plant workers under union agreements. He said the Detroit Three had converged on a 23% wage hike offer and made progress on other issues but told UAW members "there is more to be won". Fain confirmed the Detroit Three had converged on a 23% wage hike offer and made progress on other issues. But he told UAW members "there is more to be won". While warning of possible expanded strikes, Fain also told UAW members the talks were closing in on an end. Walkouts began at the three automakers on Sept. 15 and now more than 34,000 union members are waging the UAW's first simultaneous strikes against the Detroit Three. Fain declared "the days of the UAW and Ford being a team to fight other companies are over."

As a 25-year-old junior executive at the car company that bears his last name, William Clay Ford Jr. had a bracing introduction to labor negotiations when a union official demanded that he stand up and vouch that he was made of the same stuff as his great-grandfather Henry Ford. Mr. Ford, now the company’s executive chairman, harked back to the moment in an interview this week about how he and his company are navigating one of their most difficult labor negotiations in decades. The United Automobile Workers union has shut down three Ford plants, including its largest, and other plants and distribution centers at General Motors and Stellantis, which owns Chrysler. He has referred to the companies as “the enemy,” and has said the union is fighting “corporate greed” and standing up to the “billionaire class.”In a speech this week, Mr. Ford said the strikes were helping nonunion automakers like Tesla, Toyota and Honda. Mr. Fain responded that workers at those companies were future U.A.W.

On Thursday, a senior Ford executive said the automaker was "at the limit" of what it can spend on higher wages and benefits for the UAW.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford called on autoworkers to come together to end a monthlong strike that he says could cost the company the ability to invest in the future. Many jobs will be lost,” said the great grandson of company founder Henry Ford. Ford has 57,000 UAW workers compared with 46,000 at GM and 43,000 at Stellantis. Ford said the strike at the Kentucky plant is harming tens of thousands of Americans who work for parts suppliers and Ford dealers. Fain said on Wednesday that Ford told UAW bargainers for nearly two weeks that it would make another counteroffer on economic issues.

Ford, who has been a part of UAW negotiations since 1982, pleaded with union members and leaders to work with the company, instead of against it, to reach a tentative deal to "end to this acrimonious round of talks." Such comments by the great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford are uncharacteristic during contract talks with UAW. Ford, ahead of speaking on stage, told reporters he wanted to "elevate" the conversation about the contract negotiations. This should not be Ford versus the UAW," Ford said. "It should be Ford and the UAW vs. Toyota and Honda, Tesla, and all the Chinese companies that want to enter our home."

"Toyota, Honda, Tesla, and others are loving this strike," Bill Ford said Monday. Analysts have already said Tesla is winning the UAW strike. "Toyota, Honda, Tesla, and others are loving this strike because they know the longer it goes on, the better it is for them. But a fresh analysis released by the bank's analysts Monday found that, with Kentucky Truck down, the UAW strike has now cost Ford an estimated $517 million to GM's estimated $507 million. AdvertisementAdvertisementOne analyst called the UAW's strike a "nightmare scenario" for the Detroit Three, whose electric vehicle business models would be "torpedoed" by the UAW's demands.

The percentage of Black workers in the auto industry today is more than double their share of the workforce overall. But the decline in US auto jobs and the erosion of unions have hit Black workers hardest. Black workers are likelier to belong to unions, in any industry, compared to White and Hispanic workers. Black union workers earn on average 16.4% higher wages than non-union Black workers, and they are likelier to have health care and retirement benefits, studies show. Hard-won gains disappearSoon after Black auto workers broke into better paying jobs, the US auto industry began its long decline, decimating Black communities in particular.

Policies and practices that have disadvantaged Black Americans generation after generation help explain the racial wealth gap. Black veterans find it much harder to obtain benefits; one study finds Black claimants were twice as likely to have their applications queried. 1877Southern states begin enacting “Jim Crow” laws, which formalize racial segregation. The laws restrict civil liberties and limit job opportunities for Black people as employers relegate Black workers to lower-skilled roles. 1896The U.S. Supreme Court rules in Plessy v Ferguson that racial segregation is permissible.

The world needs affordable EVs more than ever as electric cars will play a big role in hcelping countries cut planet-heating pollution. “When legacy [carmakers] talk about catching up to Tesla or catching up to the leading Chinese automakers, it’s difficult. It is by far the world’s biggest EV battery manufacturer and dominant in the supply and processing of many critical components needed to make the batteries. A battle between Detroit carmakers and the United Auto Workers union, which escalated on Friday with targeted strikes in three locations, is unfolding amid a once-in-a-century technological upheaval that poses huge risks for both the companies and the union. The strike has come as the traditional automakers invest billions to develop electric vehicles while still making most of their money from gasoline-driven cars. The negotiations will determine the balance of power between workers and management, possibly for years to come. That makes the strike as much a struggle for the industry’s future as it is about wages, benefits and working conditions. Pay is one of the biggest sticking points: The union is demanding a 40 percent pay increase over four years but the automakers have offered roughly half as much.

Here is a (highly) abbreviated rundown of how US society settled (so far anyway) on an eight-hour workday. The strike failed … but four years later US Steel reduced its workday from twelve to eight hours.”Pioneering employers — and a six-hour workday — make wavesIn 1926, the Ford Motor Company, under the leadership of Henry Ford, famously instituted an eight-hour-a-day, five-day workweek. Kellogg decided in 1930 to institute six-hour shifts in place of eight-hour shifts, with some reduction in workers’ pay. Kellogg’s move attracted national attention, and soon there was a push to federally legislate a six-hour workday. Hunnicutt interviewed several Kellogg workers about why they returned to a longer workday.
